How can we, (Youthzones) help to curb rampant Drug & Alcohol abuse in Mutare?

I have noted with great concern that youths in several high density suburbs in and around Mutare are abusing alcohol and other drugs. Just last week, a certain youth from Sakubva died after consuming undiluted 'ZED' spirit. This is just a tip of an ice-burg. A couple of weeks ago, 2 siblings died in Penhalonga's Muchena area after consuming the same drink. Police are mulling an idea to ban the drink as they say it is entering the country illegally from Mozambique. The question is "Is it necessary to do so"???. I have seen the drink being consumed normally in Mozambique without any problems!!!!! As if it's not enough, youths together with other wayward adults, are abusing a cough syrup called 'Bron Cleer', which contains codeine!!!! Let's all participate to this discussion so that we can come up with several suggestions for policy implementation. I will be holding a discussion with Inspector Mwenga at Murahwa Police Headquarters next week Wednesday, 6th of June 2012, to give the youths' perspective on this sensitive issue. If all goes according to plan, we could hold an open Public Indaba which will include all stakeholders from youths, government, police, business, education and health sectors. We invite valuable contributions from other Youthzones besides Mutare. Please take part as your contribution could be very vital in helping us curb this issue without much ado.

Firstly, let me appreciate your noble move. This issue, for your own information, is affecting several people even in rural areas. My suggestion is that, please come up with an awareness campaign that will educate people on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. Prayers are also needed because some of the cases are spiritual!!!

The most important thing is to try and keep the youths occupied like you are already doing and then try to teach them slowly but surely. They will understand.
