Xstrata creating hope amongst Steelpoort girls

IMG_8270.PNG

More than 120 girls came together to play soccer in Steelpoort and interact and braai together etc. The tournament went extremely well with five teams participating and each team consisting of at Least twenty players. The whole tournament was more of building relationships with our new female friends and to my surprise many people including local radio station attended the tournament and saying girls' soccer was no longer active and this tournament created hope amongst this girl. I even attached the sms sent to me by Bafana, the coach of City Ladies who even said he was always dreaming that female football to be recognized and girls to be valued. One of my highlight was seeing boys soccer players who we normal work with assisting in terms of carrying tables around, chairs, braaing for the girls, Johannes from Jane Furse Youthzones site officiating all the games. Mosehla from City Rocks and Pule from Wigan jokingly since they played in their childhood they never saw such beautiful trophies. One could see in these girls' faces as they were all receiving trophies and medals. The teams which were participating were City Rocks, City Ladies, Liverpool, Napoli and Wigan. City Ladies won the tournament by beating Wigan 1-0 in the finals. So much positive feedback and people appreciating the partnership of Youthzones and Xstrata. So many coaches asked even to hold again such educational tournament  only for the juniors (where they can learn life skills and even IT skills). And the winner of the IT competition during the tournament is Napoli Ladies and they received brand new laptop. This is the beginning of incredible journey in Steelpoort. Above all thanks to Steve Makgoba and Robert Raphele from Xstrata and not forgetting Kgomotso.

Nice feedback and picture Doc. There are many things to mine in Steelpoort, including potential and hope amongst the youth.

Also before the final, the coaches and some of the masters made a small match which was entertaining. Each team left with two balls for participating
