The Hearts and Minds

The physical surroundings do not reflect the hearts and minds of the people that live here. The people I have encountered in Hillbrow are just like the people in Sandton. The people of Hillbrow want the same things as everybody else; they want a good education for their children, they want to feel safe and
secure in their homes, and they want the opportunity to partake the unprecedented opportunities available to South Africans today and tomorrow.
There are parts of the neighborhood that keep on surprising me. After hearing all kinds
of stories about Hillbrow, and expecting the worst (I even brace myself to see
or hear gunshots), it is refreshing to feel quite normal walking through the
streets. The Lutheran Community Church. Good things are being done there.

The nicest part of walking through any neighborhood in Johannesburg is meeting the young people. The youths in this city constantly amaze me with their spirit. They may not have much in their lives, but I’m guessing they are probably a lot more contented and happy than many other kids who have a whole lot more. I wouldn't call Hillbrow a rough neighborhood now. I would call it the fiercest neighborhood I've ever been to. It isn't as scary as I had expected it to be, but I still watch my back diligently the whole time.
