Creating a better Mzansi through sport and development
I might be thinking what I would have done with R1800 or how often do I spent that not realizing where it went to. How often to others it looks like small amount or even to think of it. I also often say there is something better beyond money or money can't buy happiness etc. But this time 60 youth from Stoffel Park Informal settlement in Mamelodi hired a bus to visit their peers in Kameeldrift where there was a massive exchange tournament and training while having fun. The whole trip cost R1800. Just the excitement and joy and singing and everyone greeting them as they were leaving the settlement. It was like famous team traveling to FNB. It was just beautiful scenes. The whole exchange, which was held on the 22nd of April 2012 from 10am, had more than 1000 people attending. It was just beautiful. It was not only sport tournament rather training where I spent time with all the teams from Kameeldrift and their working on Conflict Resolution and also involving the juniors in their games since they roam around and do nothing and look up to majority of the seniors boozing around or fighting etc. So role models it was something we worked on more on the day as part of recent game of life skills. And I must say it was ver interesting and challenging since there were so many people and all what we were doing it caught everyone 's attention while some of the spectators will want intervene while drinking and enjoying the games. I also came with our two youth leaders from Mamelodi, Raymond and Lucas who were superb and they will help teaching the teams computers whileI am busy organizing football or coaching and doing life skills and coming to computers. It was all beautiful at the end of the day. I also worked on blaming, teamwork, respect, sharing and listening life skills activities with both netball teams. The soccer went very well our friends The Real Kings FC from Stoffel Park from Mamelodi cruised to the final by beating Real Madrid 3-0 and Nkadimeng 4-0 and then losing the final getting the prize of R1600. They lost to Umhlanga FC by 3-0. I must we did well as a team. And the way they handled themselves and applying the life skills on the field by not getting themselves into fights in a community which is dominated with anger, violence, alcoholism and conflicts. I must say the Kameeldrift is improving and changing and becoming good. We can even reach the final without any disturbances. The Real Queens netball team won by big margin against Kameeldrift netball team. We had Under 15 game before the final where Plot 175 was playing plot 123 and Plot 175 won by 3-0. At the end of the day, friends were made and everyone learnt something including myself. Big thank You to Danny.
