It has been exactly a year since last I hang out with our friends in our current new ten sites and one thing it was going on in my mind was what will these guys think of me as I last saw them last year and everything was great by then and I disappeared for a year. We had to wait for a year to go ahead to work in these areas. To my surprise through our friendship, trust and respect developed between each other, all of them will still remember my name and welcome me with their excitement as I am in my fourth site visit out of ten and so far so good. What is also interesting is that because we never came into their communities as heroes or sponsors or make any promises rather we came in as their friends, played together, shared jokes, life etc. And these areas are impoverished informal settlement around Gauteng. What you put in thats what you get in. Being nice and kind people, respecting and loving them it will definitely be what you get back most times.

There is power in friendship created, never to be under-estimated. Surely there is a lot about life to be learnt in the ghetto. I believe that's where you find most of those attributes listed by Schalk and many more.

Ja boet... sometimes the ngamulas wonder what they can learn from township or more poor areas... the answer, or part of the answer is grace, humility, friendship, trust, forgiveness... the most important things in life. I look forward to seeing everyone again, hopefully they will extend same welcome to Umlungu!!
