Creating a better Mzansi through sport and development
Nothing could replace the beautiful atmosphere and the coming together of all the youth from different sites hanging out together, sharing, learning, laughing, dancing, singing .... . The scene was just incredible. The youth, boys ad girls from Soweto, Mabopane, Katlehong, Evaton North participated in the Football and netball tournament which was held in Qedelizwe High School in Evaton North. The tournament was held on the 15th of April 2012, and it was delayed about 3 hrs but everything went well. There were 160 active participants. There were four soccer teams i.e. Evaton Arsenal FC from Evaton North, Allelujah Zebra Force FC from Mabopane, K1 United FC from Katlehong and The boys FC from Soweto. And the netball teams were Motsweng Seniors and juniors Netball Team from Katlehong, The Girls netball team Juniors and seniors from Soweto. Everyone arrived safely for the tournament and I called everyone together and introduced everyone : The youthzones staff and the team leaders and the team. The main thing was to get these lads to interact and also to learn more about youthzones as they are now identified as entry points in their respective communities. They are he champs who will be sharing with other both in their community and making the circle bigger by teaching their peers. And while they themselves create their own luck and grow while sharing with others. The interesting thing is normally when one has tournament, one expect to see a prize displayed or mentioned. To the surprise of everyone, I asked everyone what do they think they are playing for? And some said money, some said cup, some medal. And I said anyone who will get it right I will give that person R50. None got the answer right. I said to them the prize is friendship. But I knew all of them both winners of netball and football teams will be receiving small surprise during the week. And the main thing is normally when one display money or prize, that destroy unity/teamwork, friendship... And obvious it was bit challenging since some of these lads are used to gambling and obvious some of them looked perturbed. But I convinced all of them how powerful is the power of friendship/love/unity. I asked all of them do they prefer friendship or money and I gave them example of steady girlfriend vs prostitute relationship. It all turn out good. Dj was in the mix and he did well. The kick off started with the netball tbetween Qedelizwe Arsenal netball team and Motsweng netball team from Katlehong while the boys were watching and it was very interesting with the spectators chanting and having good time. The Katlehong team won by 6-1. And then Soweto The Girls smashed Katlehong Juniors and The Katlehong seniors won by 6-4 against The Girls netball. And then back to soccer, The hosts Arsenal FC defeated Allelujah Zebra Force FC by 6-1 and then also The boys FC defeated K1 United FC from from Katlehong by 7-2. We also had lunch time where everyone received a lunch pack with a drink. We then witnessed eventful final between Arsenal and the Boys FC officiated by Doc and it was not completed because it was too dark to shoot penalties and the match is going to be replayed on the next coming weekend. At the end of the day, it wasn't about winning but making friends and learning more about youthzones, learning from every encounter of life (life skills). Life beyond football and netball which brings us together. Thank you to the patience of ABI and the staff for being patient to this unique approach and methodology of youthzones. As now things are rolling and so much trust have developed with the stakeholders. And the stakeholders can do things by themselves and organize event by themselves. Beauty. They are independent. The lads are hopeful and are ready and equipped to do things by themselves and ready to teach others while some go to tertiary and others getting employed. I must say the foundation of working with these lads is strong and genuine and it will go for long and it will be strong since they are not dependent or have begging spirit among them. So far so good.

This is awesome. I love this!!! It's amazing how such gatherings help create lasting friendships. We had the same experience here in Mutare. It was exceptional. Let's keep up the good work guys.
