Some will argue that being born in or living in South Africa, makes you a South African. I'm an Afrikaner, a Dutchmen, Buno, Boer... and what I'm discovering is to call myself a South African, I have to grow with the country. As Mzanzi changes shape, I need to flex, learn, become. This is in no way tedious or a depressing moral obligation- it's an exciting invitation to become part of peoples lives, to learn new things, to inculturate, to make friends. My 2010 World Cup wish, besides that the trophy stays in Africa, is that this year, this event will reveal something of who we are, as individuals, as South Africans and as Africans.
For me 2010 is the year of the vuvuzela, the year of discovery and expression.
Just reading the list of these youth zones, the diversity of these town names, makes me realise that we live in a very interesting place, worthy of exploration; both geographically and relationally.
