Looking back over my chidhood, I can't recall a single discussion with either parents on how I was feeling or issues I was dealing with during childhood. I don't remember ever feeling that talking to my parents when I was having a problem was even an option.
But times have changed, saw a story on one of our groups and I was very impressed about it.
Khalo Kings Youth Development based in Ga-Madiba Village in Mokopane started running in 2019 by Lesley and Lebogang Khalo a young couple who had passion to bring change and better their community.
They started soccer and netball teams, then along the way more kids came, the more they realized there are more needs and challenges around. Talking about humble beginnings, they used their garage then more kids started joining. They now needed larger space and walla, KK Youth Development Center was born, more programmes are offered for free.
What caught his (Lesley) attention were certain changes of behavior on some of the boys and he was really concerned, had a chat with some of them and picked up some personal issues and that's when he decided to start the young men talk.
''I met up with the boys and just had an open conversation about; their ambitions in life, the importance of good behavior and self discipline, mental health and wellbeing''--Lesley
And believe you me we started with some shyness then as times goes by more of them started opening up.
In 2019 (just 5 years ago), around 13,774 mental-health-related deaths were reported in South Africa; 10,861 of these deaths (approximately 79%) were men (South African Society of Psychiatrists, 2024: Pan, 2022
Super proud of our own Youthzoners; Lesley and Lebogang Khalo.
Thank you for generously contributing and your willingness to give your time and service unselfishly for the betterment of your community.
We need more of you!!!!!
