We tended to make every issue an important issue and that one has to be careful about which battles to fight. In the bigger scheme of things, there are certain issues that are worth getting worked up about and there are others that are just not worth it. The key is to choose carefully which things you are going to invest your energies in. Life is about choice.

We must always remember the people involved. A company that is poor on people is a dead company, because the company is the people. Sometimes as leaders we say in fancy terms that our greatest asset is our people, but then we turn around and we treat them inappropriately. If we say people are our greatest asset, where do we put them on our balance sheet- on the liabilities side or on the asset side?

When we do the extra mile bit for our clients, they'll continue to give more. When we go the extra mile for our people the go a long way to help us succeed. When we go the extra mile for our families it make things easy. It's all a multiplication of things that we do. Every deed comes back to us multiplied. Even in a place where people don't like us, when we go the extra mile we may give them problems because they have no choice but to notice us.

We need to train ourselves to listen to others because it is a real danger to be busy formulating our thoughts and response while someone is talking. Of course sometimes all we hear is absolute rubbish, but on many occasions we will lean something from conversations. It's also important for experienced leaders to listen to younger people, so that we can understand where they are before we can guide them.
