Launch of Breaking Barriers Gansbaai
In May this year, Barclays launched an 18-month intervention in partnership with Active Communities Network that will see 60 youngsters getting an opportunity to achieve an accredited Coaching Science qualification, opening doors for employment opportunities to youth from the Overstrand. The Football Foundation is the local implementing partner for this project, with the support of the Overstrand Municipality.
The course, presented and accredited by eta and Changebox Training Management, offers a comprehensive development programme to up-skill participants in the following areas:
These skills would be applicable in building the capacity of the local community to work in the Gansbaai area, and for further education and employment pathways available to course participants. This project also includes a two year action research programme to evidence the impact of the project on the community and participants.
The course kicked off with a Sport for Community Development and Social Change module presented by Rubel Ahmed from 16 – 20 May 2011. This gripping course was a brilliant induction to the 6 month programme and a catalyst for cohesion within the diverse student group. John Masilo from eta started with his course material on the 27th of May and the students have been on their toes ever since! The first cohort is set to graduate in November 2011.
Head of Barclays Spaces for Sports visits site
Kirk Harrison, Head of the Barclays Spaces for Sports global programme, travelled more than 10,000 km from London to visit the Absa/Barclays Spaces for Sports site in Gansbaai. As part of a trip visiting various global Spaces for Sports projects, Mr Harrison, accompanied by Paul Golding from Absa Corporate Social Investment, paid a visit to the Barclays-funded Breaking Barriers programme. It was a great honour for the students to meet and spend time with Kirk and Paul, and also a privilege for the delegates to be able to meet the students, as well as the Foundation, council and eta staff. The delegation also visited the Dibanisa environmental education lesson taking place at Grootbos’ Growing the Future agricultural project for women. The sunny winter’s day combined with an action-packed itinerary provided for an all-round splendid visit. The Foundation would like to thank Misters Harrison and Golding for their genuine commitment to the Gansbaai Communal Sports Centre; their dedication is a marked contribution to the success of the site.
