The Football Foundation
Netball Match 15/05/2012
U13 & U15
Against Curro, Hermanus Private School
The Football Foundation netball team girls were very excited about the game that they were going to play and were focused during the journey to Curro private school based in Hermanus.
Altogether, there were 16 players with two substitutes if needed but everyone that came to the match did play during their games.
U13’s
Their match was very successful as they won by one point – 9-8. This was an extremely close game as both teams played exceptionally and played to the best of their abilities. The football foundation girls started off nervous but when they scored one shot, that’s when the team came together and played excellent and that reflected in the score. Overall, the girls themselves were very pleased with themselves as well as the staff.
U15’S
The U15 girls played excellent also as they were constantly focused in the game and worked as a team. Their defence was strong and the shots were excellent, very direct and quick. This is what opposition team struggled to defend with. From the excellent U15’s performance, this reflected in the score as they won also by 12-7. The girls themselves were very pleased with their performance and cannot wait until their next match.
Dibanisa Project - Netball Girls
27th April – 25th May
Dibanisa Project is a six week project to introduce children about the wildlife and to make them aware of animals and plant life. The Dibanisa project is focused with the netball girls with The football foundation for six weeks visiting various organisations for example, Tourist Centre, Grootbos, Marine Dynamics, the beach and after six weeks a camp is provided for them to come to an end of the project.
The first session for the project was based in the tourist centre in Gansbaai and the girls were given a summary of what the project will consist of. During this session, the girls were given a questionnaire of different questions about wildlife itself and this was also to see what they knew already. Another task for them was to draw their houses and the different facilities they had in them. To have fun, they also learnt a song about eco-systems and frybos.
Overall, the girls were enthusiastic and excited about the project and the next coming weeks of the different sessions they will be able to attend.
Green Futures – Wednesday 25th April 2012
The girls had to be at the taxi rank in Masakhane at 14:50hr as the bus couldn’t wait. We left at 14.55hr with 17girls. The girls were taken into the classroom and were told about the indigenous plants that are growing in our area.
The girls were then taken outside and were taught how to plant a seedling. They mixed their own ground food mixtures, plant and water for them to take how home with them. Back in the classroom, they made a bookmark with pictures of different plant species that they could take home also.
Marine Lesson – Great White House – 4th June 2012
The mini bus from the great white house picked us up at the taxi rank at 14:50hr and took us to Kleinbaai, however, there was only 11 girls that arrived.
On arrival, the girls were given a hotdog and a cool drink each. Michelle, who works at the Great White House, was the teacher for the session teaching the girls about the Big 5 of the ocean, the bird life as well as the penguins on Dyer Island. Michelle created a quiz for the girls to participate in, that demonstrated all the information from the session that the girls learnt. After each correct answer, the girls were given a lollipop. When leaving the venue, we were taken to see a skeleton of a Southern Right Whale which will be soon hanging in the roof of the Great White House.
Overall, the girls have really enjoyed the sessions that have been put on for them. They have found the lessons interesting and are occupied and interested in what they are taught. This has been proven in their behaviour as their behaviour has been exceptional at all of the lessons so far. On a whole, the Dibanisa project has been successful; however, the girls need to learn about time management as they are not turning up on time to be picked up at the taxi rank.
Have a good trip. Be safe.
Grootbos Foundation launches new Athletics project
10 January 2012
The Grootbos Foundation launched a new athletics project on the 9th of January at the Gansbaai Communal Sports Centre: UMNTANA PHAMBILI. The project is aimed at giving children from marginalized communities the opportunity to participate in organized athletics training programmes, to learn about the environment, and to get access to training opportunities in tourism and guiding.
The new project was made possible by Airtours and Grootbos, with the support of the German Federal Government.
The project was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa, Mr. Gert C. Oosthuizen, Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, German Ambassador Horst Freitag, Mrs Ulla Schmidt MP (Germany), Mrs Dagmar Freitag MP (Germany) and German General Consul Hans-Werner Bussmann. Also present were sporting celebrities Olympic athlete and silver medallist Elana Meyer and former Springbok player Ashwin Willemse.

Overstrand Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, said: “I am a great supporter of the sport, or the art of Athletics. The future of our country will be determined with what we put into the development of our children. Today’s launch is to create an opportunity for our young people to get involved in athletics, to meet at club level and develop into great athletes.”
Francois Myburgh, Area Manager for the Overstrand Municipality said: “I am so proud to be part of and to witness another valuable contribution in investing in the future of our wonderful town and country. I am pretty sure that we will soon experience the positive results and dividends on the investment made here today.”

The fact that the German Federal Government have bought into the project is fantastic. It is a great tribute to the daily input of Project Manager Leán Terblanche, and Grootbos Foundation Director Michael Lutzeyer. Athletics will give a new dimension to the Foundation’s existing sport for development programmes.”
Springbok Ashwin Willemse said: “You can only be as good as the opportunities that come your way. This project offers children the opportunity to excel in life.”
German Ambassador Horst Freitag encouraged everyone to look into the future: “This project may seem like a small step today – but it is a huge step in building a strong and vibrant community.”
MP Ulla Schmidt, Former German Minister of Health, said: “I am deeply surprised by what you are doing here. It’s a great project to build up a future for the children, to get them educated, to spread hope and support democracy.”
German Consul General in Cape Town, Hans-Werner Bussmann, said: “Grootbos Foundation and the Football Foundation deserve to be commended for the extraordinary work they do to encourage young people to take responsibility of their own lives by giving them the chance to experience success.”
On the 04th of December 2011, Fillipe, Hardlife (both Manica Site), Schalk and Doc both went to visit the GB youthzones site where they all met with othr caches from around the world of Braclays for Sport. We witnessed all the great work done by the crew there and the graduation of local youth under the ETA programme. At the end of the day we had we had a small match.
