16 June is celebrated in townships all over South Africa every year with the youth wearing school uniforms and remembering the tragic events in Soweto, 1976.

In Intabazwe the you also remembered, but "it is more than remembering, we celebrate our freedom and we look forward to build a healthy country" said Doctor Mabila.

"This day is about having fun, not being used for other people's agendas" added Maluti Youth Forum Chairman, Sabelo Sigudo. 

The events at the swimming pool in Intabazwe included a school uniform march, netball against a team from Phuthaditjhaba, drama and dancing performances and a top eight football tournament. The evening ended off with camp fires and a braai for 120 youths. 

The celebrations was also the launch of a partnership between Harrismith Business Forum, Maluti Youth Forum and Youthzones, a project of Mr Roelf Meyer. Schalk van Heerden, Programme Manager of Youthzones added: "I was happy to see Highway, Shoprite, PSG and Pick 'n Pay contribute to this event, showing they care about the young people 'on the mountain'". 

Everyone had fun and Sibonelo Mazibuko, a young man who is deaf and mute used his cell phone to write a message of thanx to the event organisers. The Maluti Youth Forum's Tirelo Mokhuane, Lucas Moloi and Tumelo Motloung said the hard work organising was definitely worth it and that the young people appreciated the event. "It won't end here, we will work with more sports teams and cultural groups and also get more privileged people involved in the good things happening in Intabazwe, next year Schalk should not be the only Afrikaner participating" said Tirelo Mokhuane.
